An investigation of local sources of limestone and dolomite suitable for use in a local steelworks has been initiated. Dolomites in the Middleback Range appear to be chemically suitable but the reserves are limited. Those situated in the Cowell region, on Yorke Peninsula or on Fleurieu Peninsula might have adequate reserves. A supply of limestone is expected to be provided by the Fleurieu Peninsula Marbles as the Tertiary limestones of Yorke Peninsula are limited in extent. The Cambrian limestones of Yorke Peninsula and of Sellick’s Hill may not be chemically acceptable. Further sampling is recommended to determine the most chemically suited deposits, followed by detailed mapping and diamond drilling.
