Visits have been made to most of the known South Australian phosphate rock deposits in order to make an appraisal of potential reserves. The deposits, with several exceptions, are associated with limestones of the Proterozoic and Cambrian systems. Disseminated phosphates within beds of limestone have been concentrated into workable bodies which lie at or near the land surface related to Tertian peneplanation. Utilisation of the highly aluminous and ferruginous phosphates which are not amenable to sulphuric acid treatment for production of “super” will depend on satisfactory chemical treatment. The general geology of the most important deposits is described, and though no large reserves of high grade material appear to be readily available, further exploration is warranted to prove reserves of lower grade rock.
