The Radium Hill uranium mine is located approximately 60 miles S.W. of Broken Hill. The deposits are of hypogene metosomatic origin, and represent replacement lode deposits along anticlinal axial plane shears in folded Archean gneisses. Lode development is traced from shears in country rock, to augen-line knots in sericite which are centripetally replaced by rutile, ilmenite, and hematite, to massive main lode type ore, consisting of a randomly-oriented, coarse-grained aggregate of biotite, pink quartz, and ore minerals. Davidite mineralization followed and selectively replaced the iron-titanium mineral complex. Plotting of the ore bodies for the Whip and Geiger Lodes to the No. 7 Level shows irregular ore shoots surrounded by nodular type ore, in turn surrounded by country rock. The ore shoots pinch and swell in three dimensions and are controlled to some extent by the pitch of the anticlines at Radium Hill. Observations indicate that the lodes probably continue in a similar manner below the No. 7 Level. In addition to the dominant mineral suite of rutile, ilmenite, hematite, and davidite, there is subordinate magnetite, pyrite, chalcopyrite, and molybdenite. The mutual relationships of these are described in detail and the following paragenetic sequence is suggested: euhedral pyrite; coarse-grained rutile; euhedral magnetite; smaller-grained rutile, ilmenite, and hematite with accompanying exsolution phenomena; pyrite stringers; selective davidite replacement of the other crc minerals; pyrite and chalco-pyrite stringers, and molybdenite.
