Five test boreholes were put down on the above site, each having a proposed maximum depth of 150’. Generally uniform conditions were experienced in each hole; hence correlation on a broad scale was reasonably good. Cinders and similar fill material covered the site as a reclaiming medium, except in the N.E. corner, where natural fossiliferous sand was exposed. From approximately 8’ – 32’, soft wet, clayey sands and limey sands were encountered. In some areas these grade into a thin shell grit band, thence generally into fossiliferous sandy marl, cemented to form hard lumps in softer groundmass. From approximately 40’, the sequence changed sharply into a continuous succession of generally very stiff, moist silty clays, clayey to sandy silts, and fine to coarse sands. The material to 40’ was generally saturated, whilst below this level, water occurred in a series of shallow sandy pockets at very irregular intervals. Some small variation of static water level has been noted with tidal influence. Material capable of adequately supporting piling occurs from 42’, however, it is suggested tentatively that piles be driven to an arbitrary depth of 55’. The above remarks apply on the assumption that the information so far available is truly representative of the area.
