Ammonium Nitrate NH4NO3, a nitrogen rich chemical has been used as a plant fertiliser for many years. It has also been mixed with nitro glycerine and fillers as an explosive - the familiar A.N. gelignite denoting the addition of ammonium nitrate, it has taken the place of sodium nitrate in this respect. The use of straight fertiliser grade ammonium nitrate mixed with fuel oil has been a recent development pioneered in the U.S.A. and rapidly gaining popularity in view of it being safter to transport, store and use and by virtue of its comparitive low price, approximately 1/3 the cost of gelignite.
