Three test holes were initially drilled to depths of up to 100’, to determine the stratigraphic sequence and provide a basis for the selection of the number and depth of sealed tube samples, required for the 7 subsequent bores. The profile consists of a thin artificial surface cover, overlying stiff silty clays of Pleistocene – Recent Age. These clays rest on a fragmentary, discontinuous Pliocene limestone from 6’6” – 15’0”. This limestone is in part fossiliferous and interbedded with a complex succession of sands, clays and silts, which are developed to a greater extent below the main limestone mass, and continue to the maximum depth attained. Footings should be supported on short piles seated into this stable limestone horizon, where refusal to penetration should be met. Surface clays should be sufficiently stable to overcome any overturning moments.
