Two test holes were put down at the site, Percussion Hole No. 1 to a depth of 40’, and Percussion Hole No, 2 to a depth of 66’. The soil profile consisted of 9’ of calcareous material overlying a considerable thickness of plastic fissured clays, probably of Upper Pliocene age. Foundation conditions are poor as the bearing capacity is low, and there is the probability of irregular small perched water pockets occurring to a depth of approximately 18’. The calcareous material is subject to loss of strength with increase in moisture content, and also tends to vary laterally, and it would not be advisable to use the proposed two-level foundation in this zone. The fissured clay does not have a high bearing capacity but conditions would be more uniform in this material. It is recommended that all foundations be located at the proposed tunnel level, and that a basement be incorporated into the design of the building.
