Exploration of the limestone of the left abutment by mapping, adits and five diamond drill holes has revealed extensive bedding plane faults, shears and shear tension joints. Fracturing and brecciation caused by the fault movements has allowed deep weathering and solution to take place, with the formation of clay seams and open cracks and cavities, principally along bedding plane faults. The openings form a continuous leakage path under the abutment. However controlled grouting should be able to fill the cavities.
