The site has been tested through construction of three percussion boreholes to depths of 50’ to 60’ and a number of shallow probes extended to the hardened surface of a limestone horizon, encountered at approximately 11’. A test pit 8’ x 5’6” and 11’ deep has subsequently been excavated to confirm the drilling results. The site was previously tested by two diamond drill holes, put down to determine the foundation conditions for the previous premises of A.N.A. Material above the limestone mass is essentially firm to stiff and moist silty clay, overlying most irregularly, a sandy marl horizon, the product of advance weathering of the limestone mass beneath. Although physical analyses of undisturbed samples have shown that these materials are safely able to support loadings of 3 tons per square foot, it is considered that such a wide range of depth and composition precludes them from being effective foundation media for a structure of such magnitude. The limestone mass, present from depth of 9’ to 11’, should be uniformly hard and free from all surface solution depressions at a depth of 12’ below the excavation floor. Footings for the proposed multi-storey building should be supported at this depth, where very high bearing capacity and complete stability are assured. Adequate internal drainage would be available by developing bore No. 2 Water disposal in excess of 1500 gallons per hour would be possible at a depth of 42’.
