The presence of lignite in the Inkerman-Balaklava area was proved in 1922 when exploratory drilling was first carried out. A total of 30 bores were drilled between 1922 and 1950. Indicated reserves calculated on the basis of this drilling were 200 million tons. The present programme of 5 holes has shown an extension of the coal to the north and north east. Bore 35 has shown a thickening of the main seam and a decrease in depth of overburden to the north east. Indicated reserves have been doubled on the basis of the present drilling and are now of the order of 400 000 000 tons within the Hundred Inkerman. A single bore dewatering test is recommended within the central area as the next phase in the exploratory programme.
