Nine test pits were examined, and the soil profiles revealed the soil to be type EM1, the dominant member of the Patawalonga Association. This soil is not expansive, but has a low bearing capacity. The recommended foundations for the soil and strip footings seated 9” below the soil surface. Suggested minimum dimensions are: External Walls: 12” deep, 21” wide, reinforced by six ½” diameter rods (3 top, 3 bottom) Internal Walls: 12” deep, 18” wide, reinforced by six ½” diameter rods (3 top, 3 bottom) with additional reinforcement under major openings. Drainage precautions should be adopted to prevent differential settlement. The soil is saline throughout its depth and great care will therefore be necessary in the construction of damp courses.
