The site for the proposed Kimba Area School occupies 8½ acres of the parklands in the north western corner of Kimba Township, with a gentle slope to northward. Test pits reveal mallee type soil profiles overlying weathered granite. The generalised average soil profile is: 0-11” Light brownish grey sandy loam, with angular grit and some kankar nodules. 11” – 2’3” Dense layer of coarse to fine kankar nodules with interstitial brown clayey fine sand. 2’3” – 3’11” Light brown, finely sandy marl earth and marl with scattered small hard kankar nodules. Depth to base very variable. 3’11” – 6’0” Red brown sandy clay with grit and pockets of white gritty kaolin, merging downward through decomposed granite to firm weathered granite at variable depth. The marl earth and marl horizon is subject to considerable loss of strength is saturated. The underlying red brown clay is subject to significant seasonal shrinking and swelling movements, but these should be effectively disseminated by the overlying material, this minimizing differential stresses. The recommended foundation practice is the use of well reinforced deep beam seated on the kankar horizon and stepped to accommodate the slope. A maximum safe bearing capacity of the order of 2 tons per square foot is suggested. Within the area of the proposed school property it is considered that there is no possibility of obtaining potable underground water supplies. Any groundwater that is present is expected to occur as highly saline seepages. Geological conditions are not suitable for the construction of drainage bores. Limited drainage of septic tank effluent might be possible from pits 8 to 10 feet deep sunk into the weathered zone of the granite. The recommended method of effluent and waste water disposal is an extensive system of agricultural drains seated about 2’6” below the surface.
