Boring has proved 1½ million cubic yards of basal Tertiary sand under 600,000 cubic yards of overburden to an average depth of 12 feet. The sands lie on an uneven basement of Permian and Proterozoic sediment which shallows to the north. The sand has a higher proportion of fines then specified in British Standards for building sand. The average clay content is 11.2% by weight. The sand which is part of the same horizon currently being worked in the Noarlunga, Albert's and Rosewall's sand pits is expected to fulfil local building requirements.
