Results are reported of laboratory firing tests made on 11 shale samples and 4 clay samples, performed in both oxidising and reducing furnace atmospheres for various length heating periods over an extensive fusion temperature range. The bloating index, a quantitative measure devised for the comparison of potentially bloatable materials, is described. The study also involved making a critical review of available research technical literature that discusses the likely causes of bloating. 3 shale samples and 1 clay sample were recommended as being suitable for undergoing pilot scale fusion tests in a rotary kiln.
