The effects of earthquakes on buildings and structures are described with reference to the 1954 Adelaide earthquake, and some severe earthquakes in California in 1952. The resistance to earthquake shock of various building materials and structures and the strengthening of structures to minimise damage are discussed. Although accurate predictions are not possible, some indication of the relative effect of an earthquake of a given intensity on different structures can be given.
