An investigation of the foundation conditions for heavy presses at the Tonsley Park Site of Chrysler Australia Ltd included the test drilling of six bores, 403 feet, the deepest bore being 115 feet. The site is located about five and a half miles south from the city of Adelaide and is situated on piedment deposits near the south eastern limits of the Adelaide Plains Basin, just north west from the Eden Fault. A considerable thickness of poorly sorted lenticular beds with varying texture distributions overlie Precambrian rock on the Para Fault Block. Correlations from bore to bore are not generally possible. No specific horizon is defined upon which to seat footings, but a zone between ten and twenty feet below the surface is suggested. Earth materials are generally very stiff or compact and are only damp down to about forty feet. Softer material occurs in thin moist layers below this depth. The vibration properties of the sediments are discussed as well as the possibility of future earthquake disturbance near the site.
