The sample received was a banded quartz-iron oxide ore containing 43.1% acid-soluble iron. The main iron oxide mineral present was martitised magnetite, the effective grainsize of which ranged from 0.01 x 0.02 mm to 1.23 x 1.63 mm, the bulk of the material being in the coarser range of sizes. Heavy liquid separations indicated that the ore must be ground to minus 52-mesh in order to produce sufficient liberation of gangue minerals from the iron oxides to permit the production of a concentrate assaying above 60% acid-soluble iron. On the other hand, the degree of liberation of iron oxides from the bulk of the gangue was extremely good at relatively coarse sizes above 14-mesh. The ore was only weakly magnetic, and low-intensity wet magnetic separation is inapplicable as a means of beneficiation. However, high intensity dry magnetic separation appears to be a possible method of beneficiation. Gravity concentration using jigs or shaking tables is the most promising method for rejecting a relatively barren tailing at sizes above 14-mesh. More detailed investigations, using both magnetic separation and gravity concentration of the ore, are necessary to determine the optimum operating conditions and the ultimate possible grades and recoveries.
