Five percussion bores were put down to a depth of 20 feet at the Cummins Area School to test foundation conditions at the site of a proposed new school. Open tube samples, sealed in plastic sleeves, were taken throughout Bores 2, 4 and 5, and the top 3 feet of Bore 3. Sealed tube samples were taken throughout Bore 1 and the remaining part of Bore 3. The unconfined compressive strength of Open tube cohesive samples was measured by a Soil test pocket penetrometer at intervals throughout the bores. Penetrometer readings were taken near the centre of Open tube samples where the material is relatively undisturbed. Relative density has been used to describe the condition in the laboratory of samples of granular materials recovered in the open tube. "Compact" has been used in place of "medium" which, by itself, has no meaning.
