200,000 tonnes of ballast are required by the BHP Co. to construct a proposed tramway that will connect the calcareous sand deposits of Coffin Bay with its bulk loading installation being constructed at Proper Bay, 3 miles south-west of Port Lincoln. The Department of Mines was asked to evaluate the suitability of a quartzite occurrence located 7 miles north-west of Port Lincoln for meeting this requirement. A geological inspection and plane table survey were carried out during December 1963-January 1964 to map the characteristics and extent of the quartzite exposure. An existing quarry on the site allows part of the structure in the quartzite bed to be seen, but the excavation of deeper bulldozer costeans is recommended to prove the extent and quality of the stone and to enable the calculation of reserves. It is envisaged that sufficient reserves should be disclosed under shallow overburden to meet BHP's needs, and that the stone's amenability to crushing and material properties are adequate for the stated use.
