Following indications from previous work, a programme of reconnaissance seismic refraction and gravity exploration was carried out in the northern portion of the Murray Basin in South Australia in 1963. It has been shown that Permian sedimentation is much more widespread, and the thickness of the section greater, than was previously known. A major fault in the Cretaceous and Permian section, striking north-eastward through Overland Corner, has been discovered. The petroleum prospects of the area have been considerably upgraded.
