A north-south line of foundation test bores along the site of the proposed new Morphett Street and Victoria Bridges intersected Quaternary and gently dipping Upper Eocene sediments to a maximum depth of 125 feet. Quaternary alluvial deposits cover an older dip slope, escarpment, and valley topography cut in Upper Eocene Blanche Point Banded Marls. The upper Eocene foraminiferal zone of Hantkenina alabamensis compressa is 7 feet thick at the base of the Blanche Point Marls sequence. Beneath the zone of Hantkenina, a further 8 feet of marls are underlain conformably by an un named carbonaceous sand.
