Fortville No. 3 was drilled as a combined water and stratigraphic well. The sequence which was encountered consists of 62 feet recent sediments; 338 feet Lower Tertiary sands and lignitic clays; 2605 feet Cretaceous sediments and 483 feet Mooga...

Fortville No. 3 was drilled as a combined water and stratigraphic well. The sequence which was encountered consists of 62 feet recent sediments; 338 feet Lower Tertiary sands and lignitic clays; 2605 feet Cretaceous sediments and 483 feet Mooga Sandstone. At the base of the Mooga Sandstone (3495 feet) an angular unconformity was intersected and the drill entered strongly weathered metamorphics. The well bottomed in severely folded quartz-sericite phyllite of Lower Proterozoic age. Drilling was completed at 3610 feet. Water production was obtained from the Mooga Sandstone, the main producing intervals being 3005 to 3100 feet and 3125 to 3495 feet. No significant amounts of hydrocarbons were detected.
