Foundations investigations for the proposed reconstruction of Adelaide Central Market, were initiated in a letter dated 6th March 1964, to the Director of Mines, from Mr. J.D. Cheeseman of Cheeseman, Doley, Brabham and Neighbour, Architects, acting on behalf of the Adelaide city Council. The proposed building will be 350 feet long, and 220 feet wide. Originally it will consist of a ground floor and a concrete roof which will be used as a car parking area. Two additional floors and a deep basement will subsequently be added. It is proposed to support the structure on boared piers founded within the Hallett Cove Sandstone. The piers are tentatively designed for a base load of 8 tons per square foot, discounting friction between the piers and the surrounding soil. The investigation consisted of four 60 feet deep percussion drill holes, one sited at each corner of the existing market area. The holes were open tube sampled throughout, with undisturbed sealed tube samples taken at selected intervals, usually every 5 feet. Holes 2 and 3 were extended to 90 feet by diamond drilling, to prove a suspected calcareous sandstone horizon (Hallett Cove Sandstone) approximately 20 feet thick, which had been penetrated in other borings in the city area. Drilling commenced on 1st April 1964 and was completed on 20th April 1964. In all, 229 feet of percussion and 74 feet of diamond drilling were completed. 45 sealed tube samples were recovered and forwarded to the Institute of Technology for testing, along with the open tube samples. The latter were returned to the Mines Department, Thebarton Depot on 20th May, 1964, where they were geologically logged at a scale of 10 feet to 1 inch.
