Diamond drilling of two holes near the inlet portal of the Happy Valley Outlet Tunnel has shown the area to lie in highly to completely weathered slate of the Tapley Hill Formation. This material is marginal in properties between weak rock and very strong soil. Support requirements and batter slopes are discussed.
