Between September 1963 and February 1964 a programme of diamond drilling and surface sampling was carried out at the abandoned Paull Consolidated mine and its environs, located approximately 18 miles north-east of Leigh Creek. Spectrographic analyses of drill core and surface rock ship samples revealed anomalously high copper concentrations, ranging from 20 to 15000 ppm Cu, present at the base of the Tindelpina Member in the Tapley Hill Formation, and in the underlying Yudnamutana Subgroup at the top of the “lower glacial sequence.” A mine recommissioning cost analysis indicates that proof of the existence about 2 million tons of ore averaging about 2% Cu would be necessary to warrant commencing further mining operations. No useful reserves of this grade are anticipated in the mine area, and therefore no further exploration of the prospect can be recommended. Further exploration of the Burr Well area, focussed along the contact of the Tindelpina Member and the Yudnamutana Sub-Group, is desirable in view of the anomalous copper concentrations indicated to exist within this zone.
