At the request of Mr. C. England, Assistant Engineer for Design, E. and W.S. Department, the sites for 5 alternative water storage facilities near Whyalla were examined on 17th and 18th February, 1965. On 18th February, the inspections were in company with Messrs. S. Ronan and S. Warwryk of the E. and W. S. Department. The project requires storage for 50 million gallons of water, at or near R.L. 330 feet. Sites 1, 2 and 4 are located in valleys which could be dammed by low embankments (probably less than 40 ft high). Excavation of embankment material from within the proposed storage area would in each case decrease the required embankment size. Sites 3 and 5 are on flat-topped hills, and are suitable topographically for the construction of reinforced concrete tanks. It is understood that no detailed proposals have been made for the type of development at each site. This report is therefore limited to notes on the general geology of the area, and a brief description of the observed surface geological features at each site.
