The Razorback Ridge iron deposit was assessed by geological mapping, drilling and metallurgical testing. Regional and detailed mapping identified bedded and tillitic iron ore in an Upper Precambrian tillite. Inferred ore reserves are in excess of 120 million tons, with an average grade of approximately 26% Fe. Three drillholes and an adit provided subsurface samples for extractive metallurgy tests. Magnetic separation recovered 50% of the iron from the raw ore at a grade of 60+% Fe; elutriation recovered 75% of the iron at a lower grade from ore reduced by C0:C02. The Braemar Iron Formation in general was found to present such difficult metallurgical problems as to render any future exploitation unlikely. Some estimates of open pit mining capital and operating costs were made, which also indicated that exploitation presently would be uneconomic.
