The site of a proposed pumping station at Tailem Bend was investigated by means of two test pits and three drill holes 9m deep. The site is underlain by a veneer of Holocene slopewash and alluvium over Tertiary Ettrick Formation calcareous marl and limestone. Nor'west Bend Formation and Mannum Limestone are exposed in the adjacent river cliffs.
