This report represents a preliminary evaluation of the results received to date, of a sedimentary study made on cores from wells in the Gambier Embayment by N. Trueman, D. Smale, and E. Stock of the Australian Mineral development Laboratories. Clay mineral and heavy mineral analyses are available for Mount Salt 1, Geltwood Beach 1 and Kalangadoo 1. Grain and spectrographic analyses are available for Mount Salt 1 and Geltwood Beach 1 only. The clay mineral assemblages indicate that the depth intervals 4100-8480 feet and 9360-12301 feet in Geltwood Beach 1 are respectively equivalent to the intervals 2500-5290 feet, and 5640-6850 feet, in Kalangadoo 1. Neither of these intervals are represented in Mount Salt 1. Also, the sediments above 3320 feet depth in Geltwood Beach 1 are equivalent to the sediments above 2000 feet depth in Kalangadoo 1 and to the whole of the sequence represented in Mount Salt 1. Heavy mineral analyses indicate an abrupt change in the source of sediment deposited between core intervals 8 and 9 in Geltwood Beach 1, core intervals 3 and 4 in Kalangadoo 1, and probably somewhere below the bottom of Mount Salt 1. Spectrographic analyses suggest that environments of deposition influenced the concentration of some elements, and consequently may define the boundary between the Paaratte Formation and Belfast Mudstone, and may be used to locate the transgressive marine facies of the Bahgallah Formation. It may also be possible to subdivide the Merino Group into at least two units by this means. It is emphasised, however, that these correlations are somewhat tenuous and preliminary, and further analyses are needed to confirm them.
