Gravity surveys in the North-West Province of the state, begun in 1960, were continued in 1965. Detailed gravity surveys were carried out over the Claude Hills jasper zone and adjacent alluvium covered areas, near Mount Davies, and east of Gosse’s Pile. Negative anomalies at Claude Hills and near Mount Davies were drilled and found to be caused by a lateritic ochre containing various concentrations of nickel. Other anomalies were found to be caused by variations in density in the Giles Complex rocks, and by low density clays. Late in the year, a reconnaissance gravity programme was begun on the eastern half of the Mann 4 mile sheet to determine the presence or otherwise of extensions to the small outcrops of Giles Complex rocks surrounded by lighter Archaean metasediments. No definite conclusions have been reached at this stage, and it is recommended that the project be continued in 1966. A regional gravity survey was begun along the roads in the area as part of a continuing overall survey of the state.
