Reconnaissance sampling of shale and clay beds throughout central and southern Yorke Peninsula has indicated that Permian tillite beds, or Cambrian shale beds near Ardrossan may prove satisfactory for use as the argillaceous component in cement manufacture. Despite its apparent lower quality, the tillite should be drill tested before the shale because of its more convenient location and wider distribution. A programme of scout drilling of the Permian tillite is recommended for the Yorketown area.
