An extensive detailed and regional exploration programme was carried out in the North-west Province in 1965. Geological mapping, geophysical (gravity and aeromagnetic) traversing, and test drilling were undertaken to test known occurrences and extensions to known occurrences of nickeliferous ochre in the Archaean crystalline rocks of the Musgrave Block. Two additional concealed lateritic zones were discovered in the easterly extension of the Claude Hills occurrence. Grade of these two zones is extremely variable, and generally low, but one intersection assaying 1.64% Ni, from 100 to 217 feet below the surface was encountered, overlain by 75 feet assaying 1.02% Ni, and 25 feet of Quaternary sediments. Test drilling disproved the possibility of extensions to outcropping laterites in the Scarface South, Greenwood and Gosse’s Pile areas, and in the westerly extension of the Claude Hills occurrence. Associated research by AMDEL showed that the primary nickel occurs almost wholly in the olivine of the ultra-mafic rocks, and that in the ochre the nickel occurs as an oxide or hydroxide, intimately associated with manganese. The nickel silicate (garnierite) also occurs, but only at the base of the profile, and generally well below the main zone of ochre formation. Further exploration is recommended.
