Three mineralogically distinct areas within the iron ore occurrence at Greenpatch have been diamond drilled, and small samples of representative portions of the drill cores were submitted for laboratory investigations aiming to upgrade the mineralisation to a marketable iron oxide concentrate, and to assess pelletising characteristics of such concentrates. The samples from each of the areas were kept separate during testing. Sample A from diamond drillhole GD7, core depth interval 70-170 feet, was not readily amenable to beneficiation, but cationic flotation treatment methods could probably be developed to give a satisfactory grade and recovery. Sample B from diamond drillhole GD5, core depth interval 240-350 feet, contains approximately 25% Fe which can be recovered as a marketable magnetic concentrate. Gravity concentration results were relatively inferior. Sample C from diamond drillhole GD3, core depth interval 220-300 feet, was readily amenable to wet magnetic concentration, to give high grade products assaying 67.6% Fe and 68.3% Fe which contain 87.1% and 84.5% of the iron present in the drill core sample. Dry magnetic separation gave a magnetic fraction assaying 55.1% Fe, with 89.0% recovery. A screen analysis and heavy liquid separations did not show any marked difference in the iron content of the various products. This beneficiation study utilised a very fine grind, and the grades and recoveries reported are probably near maximum possible. Larger scale work is required on both magnetic and gravity separation to determine the effect of mesh of grind on metallurgical efficiency, and to assess the value of each process as a preconcentration stage before flotation. Preliminary pelletising tests conducted on the iron oxide concentrates indicated that satisfactory pellets can be formed using 0.75-1.0% bentonite and 15-30% moisture.
