Discovery of major deposits of phosphate rock in Queensland by Broken Hill South Ltd was announced to the press on October 28th, 1966. The occurrences are located some 90 miles S.S.W. of Cloncurry and 20 to 40 miles S.S.E. of Duchess. Commercial grade rock was reported to outcrop intermittently within one area some 15 miles in length and up to 3 miles in width with sections up to 40 ft. in thickness while a second location, some miles away “contained commercial assays”. An inspection of the deposits was made during the period 26th – 31st January, 1967 – the party comprised Dr. K.R. Miles, R.K. Johns (Geological Survey of South Australia), N.A. Trueman (AMDEL), L.C. Noakes, H. Jones (B.M.R., Canberra) and K.R. Levingston (Geological Survey of Queensland, Charters Towers). Mines Exploration Pty Ltd geological personnel guiding the visitor party included R.T. Russell, B. Mehaffey, D. O’Conner and J. Brock.
