During 1965, twenty reconnaissance seismic refraction depth probes were surveyed in the central and southern portions of the Murray Basin, in a search for local sedimentary troughs. No such troughs were discovered in the main basin, although a single probe near Meningie, in conjunction with previous survey information, has revealed the possible existence of shallow Permian depressions roughly parallel to the Coorong. A high velocity refraction (18,000-20,000 ft/sec.), considered to originate in igneous or metamorphic bedrock, was encountered at depths of less than 2,000 feet. In general, the sedimentary section thickens to the north, from 600 feet near Keith to 1,600 feet near Halidon.
