The geological structure of the Balcanoona map area is dominated by the Mount John-Paralana Fault System. To the west of this lineament Precambrian and Cambrian sedimentary rocks are folded into a series of fairly tight anticlines with more open synclines. There is a regional change in the trend of fold axes from east-west to north-south. To the east of the lineament Tertiary and Quaternary sediments lie unconformably upon gently folded Precambrian and Middle Cambrian rocks, and include two horizons of cemented piedmont gravels which form dissected table-lands. Crudely stratiform copper deposits in the Moro area occur in Lower Cambrian sediments adjacent to the Mount John Fault, and are considered to be of epigenetic origin.
