Investigations at a proposed pumping station site at Swan Reach have shown yellow sandy limestone of the Mannum Formation overlying grey sandy to clayey limestone of the Ettrick Formation. The boundary between the formations is marked by a 1m wide zone of weakness approximately 1m below minimum foundation level. The limestones contain numerous irregular solution cavities up to 15 cm diameter, and the rock mass is highly permeable. Prominent vertical joints (stress relief) occur within 12m of, and parallel to, the cliff face. Another less prominent vertical set strike almost normal to the cliff face. These joints are approximately parallel to the long walls of the excavation.
