Clarendon Dam Geological Investigation Progress Report No. 1 Appendix E Notes on Cave Formation in Units 5 and 7 Surface caves are common in cliffs formed by units 5 and 7, in the dam site area. The caves vary greatly in dimensions and are extremely irregular in shape and in size of surface opening. The cave host rocks are non-calcareous and are not of the carbonate solution type. It is probable that these caves are formed by erosion of rock which has been reduced to a friable powder by the action of hexahydrate (Fe/Mg/ZnSO4.6H2O). Erosive agents can be either wind or running water, or both.
