This investigation was a feasibility study, therefore environmental factors are dealt with in much more detail than would be necessary in a routine geochemical report. Apparently these factors has little significant effect on the results. Spot samples of soils and rocks were taken at ¼ mile intervals on 7 traverses across the western half of Clare and all stratigraphic formations were sampled in detail for comparison. Determinations of the trace metals Cu, Pb, Zn, Co, Ni, Cr, V and Mn were made on all samples. Analyses of all metals excepting vanadium tend to be slightly lower in the spot rock samples than in the detailed stratigraphic samples, and slightly lower in the soil samples than in the spot rock samples. Vanadium concentrations tend to be very low in the spot rock samples and much lower again in the soil samples. It is concluded that such regional geochemical studies provide reliable data of basic value and of economic application. Regional geochemical mapping on a 1-mile sheet basis as a standard procedure is recommended. Further investigation of a more metalliferous horizon of the Tapley Hill Slate, and of a domed occurrence of the Blyth Dolomite Beds is also recommended.
