Excavation for the proposed campus extensions will be mainly in mottled clays (Hindmarsh Clays). Hallett Cove Sandstone formation will be exposed towards the base of the excavation. The Hallett Cove Sandstone Formation varies from a very weak to strong rock, mainly in nearly horizontal lenticular layers. The main groundwater table will be below excavation level but pools of perched water are likely to occur in the mottled clays. Excavation can be carried out with earth moving equipment with some ripping in bands of stronger rock in the Hallett Cove Sandstone Formation.
