This report describes the results of geological investigations carried out on the right bank of the River Murray, at and adjacent to Tilmy Flats. A summary of the work is as follows: 8 shallow observation wells to detect lateral movement of groundwater (Tube Wells G130 - G137), 17 deep observation wells to detect changes in the groundwater regime (Tube Wells G138 - G140), 8 shallow exploratory holes to determine depth to, and thickness of Blanchetown Clay along proposed canal route (drill holes G200 - G207), measurments of groundwater levels in observation wells over the entire Tilmy Flat area, analysis of percentage soluble salt in Parilla Sands below R.L. 211ft. in Well G192. Readings have shown some slight variation in water levels during the year, but no clear relation to rainfall has been established. Fresh water has been found overlying the generally very saline groundwater. Analysis has shown that the average value of the soluble salt contained in the Parilla Sands is 0.13%, with a maximum value of 0.27% between R.L. 204.5ft. and R.L. 206.5ft.
