Ballast of moderate quality is won from an indurated fragmental limestone capping on the Nullarbor Plain. The assumption that ballast is available all over the Plain is valid, but the thickness of the cap rock zone varies from place to place. There is evidence that the better sites underlie topographic highs. Recommendations for exploratory drilling and for improving the quality of crusher feed are given.
