Two cable tool holes were drilled to test at depth the foundation conditions for a proposed bridge over the Murray River. As a result of a previous investigation, sampling was not commenced until depths of 16m and 26m had been reached. Both holes then penetrated calcareous silt, sand and clay of Mannum Formation limestones. The sediments are soils in the engineering sense, and penetration test results have probably been influenced by weakening of the sediments by the tube sampling operation.
