Department of Mines Langhorne Creek Observation Bore No. 1, sited near the western margin of the Murray Basin, in Sect. 3606, Hd. Freeling, Co. Sturt, penetrated 430 feet of Cainozoic sediments before bottoming in bedrock of Kanmantoo Group phyllites. The Cainozoic sequence consists of Quarternary silts, clays and sands overlying Upper Pliocene Norwest Bend Formation, Lower Miocene Mannum Formation, Oligo-Miocene Ettrick Formation, and Upper Eocene Buccleuch Group.
