Preliminary investigation by air photo interpretation and drilling of five hand auger holes suggests that probable reserves of sand gypsum accumulated in extensive dunes amount to approximately 10 million tons averaging 70% CaSO4.2H2O. Crystalline gypsum, averaging 60% CaSO4.2H2O and containing over 10% alunite, occurs in playa lakes on the windward side of the dunes. Total reserves of this material are not likely to exceed 5 million tons.
