Soils largely of transported origin, have been sampled over two parts of the Mount John-Paralana Fault Zone in the Balcanoona area. In the northern area (south of Italowie Gorge) anomalous copper and zinc delineated a postulated NE-trending tongue of diapiric rocks. However, sub-surface mineralisation is not indicated. In the southern area a number of small isolated anomalies are probably related to local high background levels in the faulted blocks; elsewhere transported material masks any effect from bedrock. Along the line of the major fault anomalous mercury suggests the possibility of sub-surface mineralisation, in a probably favourable structure. Rock sampling across faults to the west and southwest is recommended to discover the lateral extent of the anomalous mercury. A drilling programme will be proposed to test the anomalies.
