A recently formed syndicate has extracted 2,000 tons of material containing 3.8 per cent copper, 12,000 tons of talcose clay suitable for brickmaking and a small amount of gold from a 50 foot deep quarry in part of the old Gomersal goldfield. Malachite and azurite occur as nodules along a single lode coincident with a northeast-south-west trending and steeply dipping irregular fault zone. Primary copper mineralisation and faulting occurred simultaneously. The country rocks, consisting of Adelaidean schists and quartzite have been decomposed to clayey material by deep weathering of possibly Tertiary age. Provided that the copper bearing material is saleable, the lode should be located elsewhere in the area by trenching, geochemical sampling and drilling. Although primary sulphides will occur at depth, possibly below the 100 foot level, it is considered that only the secondary carbonate zone can be mined economically.
