The decline of petroleum exploration activity in South Australia outside the Cooper Basin natural gas province is directly related to the low initial success ratio of drilling of obvious targets. This has left large basin areas at a state where some information is known but not enough to allow a firm assessment. Many of the "conclusions'*" reached from this initial drilling campaign are therefore no more than opinions. It is the writers' considered opinion that some of these areas must still be regarded as potentially prospective, but more basic information is required to enable further evaluation. This proposed stratigraphic drilling programme would clarify some of these outstanding questions. As an initial campaign four stratigraphic wells are proposed (1) PHILLIPSON NO. 1 - Arckaringa Basin. (2) WALLIRA NO. 3 - Arckaringa Basin. |3) OULDBURRA NO. 1 - Overlap of Arckaringa Basin over (?) Officer Basin. (4) MANARRINNA NO. 1 - Western Great Artesian Basin.
