Stratigraphic evidence indicates major change in sedimentary regime in the Middle Eocene, close to the inferred onset of continental breakup. Deep sea drill core suggests an Antarctic ice sheet may have existed at this time, when Australasia was much closer to Antarctica, but Australasian data indicate warm water conditions in the Late Eocene and during the Early to Middle Eocene in NZ.
