A shallow seismic refraction and ground magnetic survey of areas between Robin Rise and Mabel Creek was made in January 1971. The target was shallow basement comprised of a material suitable to use as ballast for construction of the Tarcoola to Alice Springs Railway. A single vertical rotary percussion drillhole intersected Mesozoic and Paleozoic sediments and was completed in Precambrian granitic basement at 112 ft 6 ins total depth. Due to the thickness of sedimentary cover, there seems to be little prospect of suitable ballast sites being discovered in the region.
